IRMA

This Weekend we got hit by a Hurricane in Florida.

We were within the evacuation zone, due to storm surge warnings of up to 15ft. Our house being only 7ft above sea level, it was time we headed for high road.

We ended up at Harnes Marsh Middle School in Lehigh Acres, Florida. We headed East in hopes of out running the storm, but instead it took a turn straight for us. The area we evacuated to actually got hit worse then our house.

The shelter did allow for some amazing vantage points for the intense moments of the storm. We had a dinner view of the heart of the storm. Lucky for us the storm dissipated south of the eye by the time it had gotten to us. So once we hit the eye of the storm, the worst was over (instead of just peaking). The projected category 4 storm hit us at a category 3 and was still an amazing thing to witness. After leaving the shelter we were met with tossed semis, and even a plane in someones front lawn. The streets were littered with trees and power lines. Sometimes the power lines were still hanging just barely high enough for us to pass underneath.

Once home, we found ourselves with minimal damage, and as expected widespread power outages. This led to some HOT days, but also some of the best night skies. I had never been able to see the milky way from my backyard, Irma allowed that. I guess I just made some lemonade out of this hurricane of a lemon.

Here is a video of our evacuation and time in the shelter, and even a few time lapses from my backyard!
