The Carolinas

The Carolinas are a hub for travelers looking for the hidden Americana these mountains and coastlines have to offer.

This region is made up of both North Carolina and South Carolina. This area was originally named for the French king who founded it, and then was changed to be named for the English king after it had changed hands a few times... but their names were spelled the same, hence why it’s still The Carolinas. The vistas of the Blue Ridge and colonial feeling of Charleston you are sure to fall in love with the area like we did.

Alright, lets start off by setting the scene: It's one week after Hurricane Irma hit SWFL, we have no power, we are hot, we have no connection to outside worlds and quite frankly we are bored out of our minds. So, it's no surprise that after finding out that we have no work for an extra week, Danny and I instantly mapped out a mini vacation.

We headed out to meet our good friend John in Charleston, South Carolina. He lives on the largest island in the area, which coincidently is named John’s Island. Where we ate one of the most amazing Cuban sandwiches.

We woke up the next morning and headed out towards the Asheville, North Carolina area. There we jumped on the Blue Ridge Parkway through the Pisgah National Forest.

We took a nice short hike up to Skinny Dips Falls, a .3 mile hike to a beautiful cascading fall, with some nice deep pools to jump into... although we did swim, we did walk through some areas, and it was chilly!

We drove around the mountains and took some hikes, then we found the North Carolina Arboretum. They were hosting a new Butterfly exhibit and we figured it was a worth stop on our short trip.

The trip brought us back to Charleston where we got to do some more urban hiking and get a good look at some of the historic areas like the famous Rainbow Row and Battery park, where the south first attacked the North starting the civil war.

The town has some of the most unique food options we have found in the south, from our steam pressed ice cream sandwich (trust me it works) or our organic and local sourced shrimp and grits that I am still dreaming about at night. Make sure the Carolinas make their way into your next road trip or weekend vacation.

Don't Waste Your Weekend!
